Septic System Tip: Scrape the Plates!
Skip the Kitchen Sink Garbage Disposal (often called a Garburator) & Scrape the Plates! Excess organics are an absolute no-no for septic systems. Ground up vegetables and other organics are difficult for bacteria to breakdown.Ā This excess will overburden the system, cause frequent pump-outs, odours, blockages and system failure.Ā So scrape the plates (ideally into a compost bin) and save your septic. Septic Care Tip: Never use chemical drain openers.
Many chemical drain openers are made of highly caustic chemicals, (sodium hydroxide) which āburnā a hole through the blockage, these products can physically damage plumbing and have a very negative effect on the vital biological treatment going on within the septic tank. Bacteriological drain cleaners, such as EcoEthic Septic & Drain Treatment, are both effective at cleaning the drain and beneficial to your septic system.Ā Use a natural choice whenever possible.
Septic Care Tip: Avoid Hydraulic Overload!
Simply put, avoid too much water use in a short period of time. Ā If your septic system is āolderā and thus smaller, water use and conservation becomes even more important. Ā Spread water use out over the day, particularly laundry and bathtub use, install low flush toilets, low flow shower heads. If you have teenagers install a really small hot water tank!Ā
Septic Care Tip: Toilet Paper Only Please!
Do Not flush feminine hygiene products or wipes of any sort - no matter what the package says. Wet wipes, baby or adult, paper towel, diapers or other products should never go down the drain, even if the package indicates flushable. Ā They are likely to cause blockages at the tank inlet or outlet and potentially cause septic tank overflow - yuck thatās a bad day!Ā So.... Toilet paper only please! Ā
