Skip the Kitchen Sink Garbage Disposal (often called a Garburator) & Scrape the Plates! Excess organics are an absolute no-no for septic systems. Ground up vegetables and other organics are difficult for bacteria to breakdown.Ā  This excess will overburden the system, cause frequent pump-outs, odours, blockages and system failure.Ā  So scrape the plates (ideally into a compost bin) and save your septic. Many chemical drain openers are made of highly caustic chemicals, (sodium hydroxide) which ā€œburnā€ a hole through the blockage, these products can physically damage plumbing and have a very negative effect on the vital biological treatment going on within the septic tank. Simply put, avoid too much water use in a short period of time. Ā  If your septic system is ā€œolderā€ and thus smaller, water use and conservation becomes even more important. Ā Spread water use out over the day, particularly laundry and bathtub use, install low flush toilets, low flow shower heads. If you have teenagers install a really small hot water tank!Ā

Do Not flush feminine hygiene products or wipes of any sort - no matter what the package says. Wet wipes, baby or adult, paper towel, diapers or other products should never go down the drain, even if the package indicates flushable. Ā They are likely to cause blockages at the tank inlet or outlet and potentially cause septic tank overflow - yuck that’s a bad day!Ā  So.... Toilet paper only please! Ā
