Septic System Care Tip: Stop the Leaks
A common leaky culprit in homes and cottages are aged, degraded toilet flappers. Found in the tank of most toilets, this rubber part can degrade and crack over time allowing extra water to “leak” into your septic system. A leaky flapper can add hundreds of litres of unnecessary water a week, causing hydraulic overloading and leading to possible system failure. Check to see if the flapper is cracked or just replace it every few years. Would you like a monthly septic maintenance reminder delivered to your inbox? Effluent Filters - What you need to know
Effluent filters increase the life of your septic system by preventing solids and debris from leaving the tank and clogging up the perforated pipe in your leach field. This protects against disruptive and expensive repairs. Effluent filters should be inspected and cleaned annually. A clogged filter can cause your septic system to slow down, or back up. If you are experiencing sluggish drains or toilets, and have an effluent filter installed it’s likely time to have it cleaned. The good news, nothing is clogging your leach field! Septic System Tip: Renting out your paradise?
It is important to know your septic system limits. With the increase in popularity of AirBnB and the like, many people are opting to rent their cottages or cabins. Two people per bedroom is what most septic systems were designed for. Overusing your septic system can cause back-ups, septic system failure and lake pollution. Not to mention unhappy renters! The CHA has posters available to print (free), to inform renters about proper use of a septic system. We also have printables you can download for free for both home and cottage. Septic System Tip: Scrape the Plates!
Skip the Kitchen Sink Garbage Disposal (often called a Garburator) & Scrape the Plates! Excess organics are an absolute no-no for septic systems. Ground up vegetables and other organics are difficult for bacteria to breakdown. This excess will overburden the system, cause frequent pump-outs, odours, blockages and system failure. So scrape the plates (ideally into a compost bin) and save your septic. Would you like a monthly septic maintenance reminder delivered to your inbox?
